Virtual Patients: Running Nose and Breathlessness fits

This lesson presents a practical case in occupational medicine, and is meant for medical students. It concerns the case of Mr. Bun who has a work history in a bakery. Since a few years he suffers from complaints like red, itching eyes, runny nose, sneezing and recently he also developed wheeze and a cough with breathlessness.
The lesson is fully interactive and consists of 31 slides. The cards contain descriptive texts, questions and feedback, and illustrative pictures and movies. Certain terms used are explained. During the lesson, the learner is guided through the processes of making a diagnosis, prescribing proper tests, interpreting test results, reporting, and formulating treatment and preventive measures. At the end, the last few cards contain some multiple choice questions about occupational allergies. The present lesson is given in English.

General information about Virtual Patients & Work

The series of medical cases for medical students and physicians-in-training for Occupational Medicine has been developed by the Institute and Clinic for Occupational, Social and Environmental Medicine at the LMU university (Munich, Germany), often with the help of other institutes. The cases, developed in 2006-2013, are still present-day in many countries, and useful for education. Nevertheless, cases might be not up-to-date or valid everywhere, for example regarding diagnostic procedures, risk assessment tools, therapeutic interventions, or figures like incidence rates. Differences may be caused by differences in time periods, contextual conditions, or populations. Discussion about such aspects in a group, with a colleague, or with a teacher, is an essential part of the learning experience.
